Twenty-Nine, or 29, is a popular South Asian trick-taking card game where the Jack and Nine are the highest-ranking cards in each suit. It is believed to have evolved from the European Jass family of games, which originated in the Netherlands and were likely introduced to the Indian subcontinent by Dutch merchants.

29 is a captivating and highly strategic card game.

The goal is for your team to be the first to score 6 points.

Typically played by four people in fixed partnerships—with partners sitting opposite each other—29 uses 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck. Each of the four suits—Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, and Spades—contains eight cards. In 29, the cards in each suit rank from highest to lowest as follows: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7.

Players must bid and set a target to achieve. The winning bidder chooses the trump suit. Play proceeds counter-clockwise, starting with the player to the dealer’s right. When a suit is led, players must follow suit if possible; otherwise, they must play a trump card if available.

The player who wins a trick leads the next one. After a hand is played, players score points based on the cards captured in tricks. The objective is to collect tricks with high-value cards.

Card point values are:

Jacks = 3 points each

Nines = 2 points each

Aces = 1 point each

Tens = 1 point each

Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7) = 0 points
